Saturday - CT, MA, NH, MAINE!

Adam and I both woke up an hour before our alarm was to go off. We have been well trained by Abby and Sophie. We left 45 min. ahead of schedule (just like this whole vacation!). Stopped for a nice breakfast at the McDonald's drive through, when Russ got an important phone call.

So the plan for the day was to travel to Skowhegan for the state fair.
There was some squealing and jumping when we saw this sign.

We took I95 for a ways, then detoured to Route 1 when 95 became a bit too congested. Route 1 was also congested, but at least it was scenic. We passed through a Jim Thorpe-type town...there didn't seem to be much attraction except that all the tourists stopped there. Oh, and an antique store. And another. And...there must be 10 antique stores per square mile in Maine.

Here is the official soundtrack for the drive, proudly borrowed from the Lebanon Community Library:

Water! Along Route 1 in Kennebunk.

After some nice spontaneous detours, we reached the Maine State Fair in Skowhegan....drumroll please....

There's a parking lot at the end of this tunnel.

There were some amazing quilts at the fair (why didn't I take pictures? I don't know...too hot.) Other than that, it was less than thrilling, but a nice trip and stretch of the legs.

When we were researching the fair, we found that the town of Skowhegan has some interesting bridges, so we went in search of them after the fair. Here's the first one:

This reminds me of the town in the movie version of Empire Falls. This is an (old?) power plant. I'm not sure if it's still functioning.

The view in the opposite direction.

And the second bridge....

The swinging bridge...aptly named. Adam, Russ & Mandy all walked in unison from one end to the other while I was standing on the bridge, and it bounces and sways quite a bit. We all walked across then (there's something liberating about being a tourist in a blatantly touristy state), and if you get out of step, the floor of the bridge will rise to meet your feet and it feels like you're in that part of the funhouse where the floor does all sorts of weird things.

Then, back on the road toward Bangor to find a hotel.

This is the third sign we saw, I finally had my camera ready, and it's still blurry.

Still no real moose sighting though.

We're at our hotel at the Bangor airport now. Time to recharge both the laptop and myself. More random pics to come soon.
